The building itself is already more than 100 years old. High ceiling, clean and neat. It is old, yes, but very decently kept. I like their cashier counter the most, without machines or computers of course, but wooden cashier top and solid back cashier cabinet. Very 50s, and even looks like one of those existed since pre-war. In fact, the kopitiam, is now being proudly operated by the 3rd generation of the family!
I heard about this kopitiam from a friend of mine whom was on assignment of photographing old buildings in KL. After learning about the history behind, here I am, coming to try on their most famous breakfast toast set - with Kaya butter, soft-boiled eggs and Kopi.
Food came fast, ideal for those rushing to work! and... oh mine! it looks great! and it tastes great! I must say that the quality of the toast, is definitely not one of those normal chained kopitiam can compare! The breads were toasted just nice to be crispy from outside but warm and soft in middle, with half melted butter and generous spread of kaya. Oooo! Even people like whom not very fancy bread, love it!
Next comes the legendary soft boiled eggs. Well, I guess the picture tells all about how good the eggs are! With some soy sauce and a dash of white pepper, it's perfect!
The kopi is rather sweet to me though, if you're like me whom prefer the original bold taste of the coffee, try to ask for less sugar, or just kopi-o.
And what's more? A traditional, good quality breakfast like this, in the city, only costs me RM4.40, and no tax!
They also serve good Hainanese Chicken Rice for lunch and I heard it is selling fast! I was there about 10am, rice not ready yet but they are already preparing. The aroma of the chilli sauce that goes along with the rice, confirmed the tastiness of the lunch! Being someone greatly motivated by food, I've made a decision to come back for the chicken rice... I packed and took away though, as I was rushing back to office. Needless to tell, it is good.
Overall I would rate the kopitiam somewhat a cultural heritage. Being inside, is like being travelled through time machine back to the 50s, where the true atmosphere of "Nanyang" been recreated, and where you may imagine how your dad had been eating breakfast with your grand-dad!
It has now become my favourite breakfast spot whenever I'm in that area. Too bad it doesnt open Sat and Sun, They only open on weekdays. And if you're also around this area, why not drop by and have a cup of t Hainanese coffee! :-)
